Margo Harkin

Margo Harkin has worked in the film & television business as a Company Manager and as an award winning Producer/Director since 1984. She has been a lobbyist for independent film & television and arts interests for many years having been a founding member and Vice Chair of the former N. Ireland Film Council, an Executive Member of the Irish Film Institute, a DENI appointee to the board of the Northern Ireland Film Commission and an ACNI appointee to the board of The Tyrone Guthrie Centre. Margo is a graduate of the Eurodoc Training programme, the Arista Story Editing Workshop and Advanced Adept (All EU Media programmes).

Her work as a Producer/Director has spanned many genres from short film, to feature film, to long and short format social issue documentary, to arts documentary and education series. Her award winning first film `HUSH-A-BYE BABY’ has been distributed worldwide and has been widely anthologised. It features in curricula for Media Studies and Irish Studies in universities and colleges in Ireland, the United Kingdom, France and America. In an anthology of Irish film it has been described as 'a groundbreaking film in the history of Irish Cinema'. One of Margo’s most recent and highly personal documentaries, BLOODY SUNDAY – A DERRY DIARY, was made over a period of 6 years in the lead up to the publication of the Tribunal of Inquiry Report into the events of Bloody Sunday.

Before she was a filmmaker Margo worked as a teacher, community worker and theatre designer in Ireland and London. In the 70s she taught art for 3 years in St Peter’s Secondary School, Derry, before becoming Art Tutor and Deputy Director with Derry Youth and Community Workshop. In the early 80s she worked as a theatre designer with the Cambridge Footlights and the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs. Her longest association with the theatre was with Field Day Theatre Company where she started out as a Production Assistant in 1980 and worked her way up to Theatre Designer having taken a Post Graduate course in Set and Costume Design at the Riverside Studios in London under Percy Harris and Hayden Griffin. Margo is the Chairperson of the Board of Besom Productions Ltd.
