The Iceberg Cometh (working title)

Summary Intro

The Iceberg Cometh is an arts documentary that aspires to reveal the extraordinary artworks and energetic personality of Belfast Rita Duffy – a visionary artist deeply engaged with her social and political background. The film is proposed as the first of a trilogy over several years culminating in the delivery of Rita’s’ major work `The Iceberg Project’ to time with the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in 2012. The first film will deal with Rita’s wider work in order to create an understanding of one of the most contentious major artworks ever to emerge in Northern Ireland. It promises take us deep into a landscape of sublime natural beauty and into the most profound recesses of the human psyche.

Rita Duffy’s passion project is to tow an ICEBERG from close to where the Titanic foundered off Newfoundland to the shores of her native city. But is it possible? Equally lauded and lambasted the project has been gathering speed over a period of several years. Conscious of the need to make art relevant to as many people as possible Rita sees the iceberg as a metaphor for the people of Northern Ireland. The film will observe her struggle to discover if she can pull off a major artwork related to the metaphor of the iceberg and whether she can convince people that it is worth doing. This is the story of one woman’s imagination, generosity and tenacity and of her fervent belief that art can play a part in the healing of a divided people and contribute to a unifying force for good.
